About
Despite growing up with African print fabric, I find myself shying away from the vibrant and bold colors. I started Thrifty Upenyu (Shona for life) because I figured I couldn't be the only one that loves African Fabric but is overwhelmed by it. The accessories I sew will not look out of place or clash with ones’ everyday style or wardrobe but will add just enough color and drama.
I use different types of African Fabric. Ankara from West Africa, Kudhindha Fabric from Zimbabwe and Shweshwe from South Africa. A reflection of the people and continent of Africa.
I sew my products in my home studio with my beloved Pfaff 1229 - a machine that is more than 30 years old; creating while also trying to ensure my boys have my attention - a tricky balancing act.
